Castle Coombe Easter GP

Castle Combe Easter Classic E/1/2

With a huge pre entry of over 100 riders and the sun out, the racing down in Wiltshire was always going to be interesting for Teamwallis riders Leon Gledhill and Gwyn Lovibond. The sun was shining, but as the wind picked up over the day, by the time it was the E/1/2 race at 3 o clock there was a nasty headwind up the back straight and cross winds meaning sheltering from the wind would be vital.

The race started off fast for the first couple of laps averaging over twenty eight miles per hour, but then settled down and a small group of five riders broke away including, Jonathan Mould (NFTO Pro Cycling), Joe Wiltshire (NFTO Race Club), George Pym (Starley Primal Pro Cycling), Rhys Lloyd (Metaltek Kuota RC) and Samuel Williams (NFTO Pro Cycling). The break built a lead of thirty seconds, which went down to fifteen seconds at one point then back up and managed to stay away.

Teamwallis CHH Racing Team Riders Leon Gledhill and Gwyn Lovibond were in the mix throughout the whole race, although both riders were being asked to ride in their country’s colours with Leon riding for Great Britain as part of the Olympic Development Programme and Gwyn riding for Wales as part of the Wales Junior Cycling Team. Both had just come off a training camp held in Newport and were still active through the race at the front of the bunch. With 5 laps to go they started to move up through the group together for the final sprint finish after twenty eight laps and a tiring forty four miles of racing.

On the bell lap Jonathan Mould (NFTO Pro Cycling) broke away from his escapees and gained a good lead. He stayed away to win the bike race, with his escapees and the bunch to follow. As the bunch came in it was James Lewis (NFTO Pro Cycling) who won the bunch kick, with Leon and Gwyn coming in 7th and 10th to get two Teamwallis CHH riders in the top 10 out of a field of 100 strong riders. All in all a good day out for Teamwallis!
